Fixing Orbry Spanker Dowels

Orbry Spanker Dowels are designed to provide additional support when installing Orbry Board, damp-proof membranes or lining boards to brick, block or concrete walls. When fixing particularly heavy tiles, the adhesive alone may not be strong enough to hold the tile backer boards, tiles and second layer of adhesive. Orbry Spanker Dowels can be used with adhesive or alone when fixing Orbry Board to solid walls. The dowels can be used with 10-20mm thick Orbry Boards.

Sometimes referred to as cob plugs, Orbry Spanker Dowels are made from strong plastic, which is corrosion proof. Each plug is 60mm long, and should penetrate the weight bearing surface by at least 35mm. The head of the Orbry Spanker Dowel has been specially designed to adhere to adhesives, renders and plaster. Once the fixing pin is hammered in to place the base of the dowel expands, gripping the substrate and providing excellent anchorage – even if the base material is of poor quality.

Dot & Dab Fixing for Uneven Brick, Block or Concrete Walls

  1. Drill holes in the boards using a 10mm masonry drill, these should be at 600mm centres when using 20mm thick board and 30mm centres for 10mm and 20mm boards.
  2. Apply dabs of cement based adhesive to the boards, where the drill holes are located. Make sure the adhesive is no more than 30mm thick, and a minimum of 120mm in diameter.
  3. Press the board into place on the wall, using a level to make sure it is flat and level.
  4. Allow the adhesive to dry.
  5. Drill through the existing holes to the depth of the Orbry Spanker Dowel.
  6. Insert the dowel into the hole and hammer the fixing pin in to place.

Mechanical Fixing for Flat & Even Brick, Block or Concrete Walls

  3. Insert the dowel into the hole and hammer the fixing pin in to place.
